HOW TO MAKE HAND SANITIZER

Hello fellow S.I.P.'ers

We were going to show you how to make home made PESTO, but I am putting that one off for a bit.

Today, I want to get a bit more serious. No beer pics. No jokes.

I have many friends in this world, and many are checking up with Penny and I to make sure we are doing OK.

I have heard from many friends both on the phone and via social media.

I think people are getting more nervous by the day. The media is going nutso crazy with this virus thing. And we have no choice but to take it seriously.

The other day, our friend Gator showed up on our door with a load of Meat and Flour from our local SAM's Club.

He also had some HAND Sanitizer that he had made.

So, I asked my dear friend if I could share it with all of you. He not only said YES, he shared with me an email he sent to all of his contacts.

So rather than you listening to my mouth, let's bring in Gator Bradshaw and see how to make our own Hand Sanitizer.

Hello friends,

As the Pandemic sweeps across the globe some things we had taken for granted are hard to find. Hand sanitizer is one of them. You can not buy it for love or money in today's world. With a little creativity you can make your own.

There is a bunch of advise on the interweb for how to make this, but this is based on my own experiments. I have made 5 different batches so far, with varying degrees of success. They will ALL work as hand sanitizer, they just may not look, or feel, like what you are used to.I have put together this information, with links and advice, so everyone can do their own thing.

First and foremost what ever you make MUST HAVE at least 62% alcohol. It also should not have more than 80% alcohol.

This is the link to the WHO web site for making your own hand sanitizer. It has good information if you need to make a few hundred gallons of the stuff. You can scale it down and I am sure it is good stuff.

This link has good info as well. They explain how to make it a gel, instead of a liquid. (sort of)

Isopropyl Alcohol is hard to find but you can use ethanol. The purist form, and most readily available, is the fuel for indoor alcohol fireplaces. This link will ship it to you in a few days.

The other ingredients I have found locally. Do not use raw unprocessed aloe, either in gel or liquid form. It still has a lot of fiber in it and when you go to mix it it will clump together and make a hell of a mess. (trust me on this one)

The best I have found are the sunburn relief gels. They are 60-90% aloe, but because it is processed, it will mix well.

Here are two I have used that work well.

The last main ingredient is the glycerin or Propylene Glycol this makes it smooth and soothes the skin. With out it it will come out sticky. The best source I have found locally is personal lubricants, t hose are their main ingredients . You only need a very little amount, 1-2%. Make sure to use the water based type. One bottle will go along way. (pun intended) Like this:

At this point  you will make a great hand sanitizer in liquid form. If you want it to be thicker you need to add xanthan gum. You can get it at any grocery store. A little bit is all that is needed.

I use a mixer like this:(below) but any will work, even a blender will mix it well.

Here is my recipe for gel sanitizer.
1 quart alcohol. (if it is not 99% adjust the amount of water accordingly)
1 cup distilled water
6-8 ounces sunburn relief gel
1-2 ounces personal lubricant
1 teaspoon xanthan gum
(optional) essential oils. Be careful, it only takes a few dozen drops of some oils to make it VERY strong smelling, so add a little at a time.
.
Start by mixing your water, sunburn ointment and lubricant in the mixer. Let it run for a few minutes, add essential oils. If you are using xanthan gum, then you add it to this as well and after mixing for a few minutes, let it sit for an hour, then mix again. You need to make sure it is all dissolved.

Once all that is done, while the mixer is going, carefully (slowly) add your alcohol. allow it to mix for a few minutes on slow.

Then bottle and use.

This will make a 67% alcohol sanitizer that will also not dry out your hands.

If you can not be bothered (and have the time) you can order from these guys. They can get you a gallon of the stuff in 2-4 weeks.

Stay safe in this brave new world.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So there you have it. A way to make your own sanitizer.

Many thanks to my friend Gator for sharing this with us.

(I won't even throw in a cheap AUBURN joke.....Altho I am tempted)

Be well, be safe, and BE SMART

I can't resist just ONE cute doggie picture
